Crystal Lake Park

Crystal Lake Park is a city located in mid-St. Louis County neighbored by the cities of Frontenac, Huntleigh, Des Peres and Country Life Acres. As of the 2010 census, the population was calculated at 470 residents, making it the 11th smallest populated St. Louis county municipality. Along with its minor population, Crystal Lake Park also encompasses no more than 0.11 square miles of land … listing it in the top 10 of smallest total area for a St. Louis county municipality.

Crystal Lake Park’s history began towards the end of 1922 when a 60-acre zone of land in St. Louis county was surveyed and registered as the subdivision of “Crystal Spring Lake Park.” The primary owners were husband and wife John and Jessie Oehler, and they planned to turn the region into a resort area with an abundance of summer homes. The two had begun to acquire a reputation within real estate and land development within the surrounding area throughout the beginning of the 1900s. The region’s moniker came from Crystal Spring Lake, a 16-acre artificial lake that lasted from the 1920s until a good portion of the late 1940s.

As the resort development was commencing, The Crystal Lake Country Club golf course was beginning formation in the early 1920s and stayed inside the region until 1979, when the course moved to its current new home within Town & Country. Designed by famous golf course architect William Diddel, the course was originally owned by the Oehler family. In 1932, they sold it to publisher Fred Essen. He led many local organizations, such as the Traffic Club and Engineers’ Club of St. Louis, holding regular golf tournaments.

The area of Crystal Lake Park was growing to be so popular that, nearly after a decade from formation, Crystal Lake Park would be incorporated as a Village in 1938 and achieve city status in 1957. Vincil Francis Hunter, Sr. was the initial Mayor and served four terms from 1958 to 1966. His son, Vincil Francis Hunter, Jr., also served on the Board of Aldermen.

Although 100% residential, it is located near an abundance of both retail and commercial shops.
