Clarkson Valley

Clarkson Valley is a city located in western St. Louis County that encompasses nearly 2.75 square miles of area. Originally incorporated as a village in 1950, it is one of five municipalities within the last three decades to change to city status. As of the 2010 census, Clarkson Valley has a total population of nearly 2,632 residents.

Major roads within Clarkson Valley include Clarkson Road, which runs north and south along most of its eastern edge, Kehrs Mill Road which intersects at Clarkson Road, and Valley Road which runs along a good portion of its western edge.

Unfortunately, a majority of Clarkson Valley’s history — pre-village incorporation — has no documentation on the way of life that led to the region’s village status. Some accounts indicate that a majority of the area of current day Clarkson Valley was farmland rented out to a wide variety of farmers throughout the area. As the 1950s approached, enough residential communities were formed, resulting in the residents applying for village status. Population would reach nearly 1,000 residents in 1980 as the village received city status in 1988.

Clarkson Valley’s major attraction, also known as the centralized landmark of the city, is the Forest Hills Country Club. With a history dating back nearly 50 years, it’s been widely heralded by golf enthusiast publications such as Golf Digest, Golf World and Travel + Leisure Golf. The Forest Hills Country Club officially opened the Clubhouse and its 18-hole course called “The Championship” in December 1964.

The original course architect was Chick Adams, but the course was later fine-tuned by golf course designers Dick Nugent and Keith Foster. Forest Hills Country Club is also home to a nine-hole course referred to as “The Valley,” which is a prominent launching point for the club’s illustrious Junior Golf program that boasts a participation rate of close to 300 children each year.

Residents are served by the Rockwood School District.
